G50 vs S14: which bistro bulb to choose

The three bulb options we offer on every Houston bistro install. How each one looks on the patio, and how to pick.

By Carlos Castellano · Updated April 2026 · 4 min read

Every bistro lights customer gets the same choice. Three bulb options. Same warm color. Same price. The only thing that changes is the look of the bulb itself when you stand under it on the patio at night.

Here's how to think about each one, in plain English.

Different bulb, same warm light. The decision is about the look of the bulb itself.

The three options

Every bistro string we install can be loaded with one of these:

  • G50 globe: a small round bulb, the size of a ping-pong ball. Clean and classic.
  • S14 with a double filament: a slightly larger teardrop-shaped bulb with two simple filament loops glowing inside.
  • S14 with a lightning filament: same teardrop shape, but the filament inside is shaped like a stylized lightning bolt or a sweeping curve. More visual character.

All three are LED. All three put out the same warm amber color. All three are dimmable on the same controller. And all three cost the same. The choice is purely about the look.

What each one feels like at night

G50 globe

The most understated of the three. The round shape reads as a clean dot of light from a distance. If you want the lights to feel like part of the architecture instead of like a feature themselves, this is usually the pick. It also handles distance well. From the back of a yard looking up at a long span of bulbs, the G50 keeps the rhythm clean.

S14 with double filament

The middle option. The bulb shape is a little larger and the filament is visible inside, which gives the light a slightly warmer character at close range. From a few feet away you see the glow and the filament both. From a distance it reads as a soft point of light, similar to the G50 but a touch more textured.

S14 with lightning filament

The most decorative of the three. The filament inside the bulb is shaped to be seen, which means the bulb itself becomes part of the look of the patio when it's lit. People who want the install to feel like a design element, not just a light source, tend to gravitate toward this one.

How to pick

If you want a clean, calm look that just feels like good ambient light, the G50 is the safest bet. It's also the most popular of the three for our clients with modern homes.

If you want a little visual warmth without being showy, the S14 double filament is a strong middle ground. It feels traditional without being old-fashioned.

If the patio is the centerpiece of how you use your backyard and you want the lighting to be part of the experience, the S14 lightning filament gives you that. It's also a good fit for spaces with a more transitional or rustic style.

The honest answer is that all three look great. We've installed all three across Houston backyards and not had a single client unhappy with their pick. The differences are subtle. The bigger decisions for a bistro install are the layout, the cable tension, and the anchor hardware. Get those right and any of the three bulbs will look the way you wanted.

Things that are the same regardless of bulb choice

  • Warmth. All three are the same warm amber. None of them will read cool, blue, or harsh.
  • Lifespan. The G50 is rated longer than the S14 options, but every bulb we install is built to run for years on Houston nights without replacement.
  • Dimmability. All three dim through the same smart controller, compatible with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit.
  • Replaceability. If a single bulb goes after a few years, we replace it. No need to swap the whole string.
  • Pricing. Same install cost no matter which option you pick.

What if I'm still not sure?

When we walk a property to plan the install, we can bring sample bulbs and show you each one lit, in your space, against your house, before you decide. That's the easiest way to feel the difference. A photo on a website never quite captures it.

If you're already considering a bistro install for a Houston backyard or patio, this is one of the easier decisions in the process. Pick the one that looks right when you see it lit.
